I Never Planned on Photographing Weddings. Then I Photographed One.

A friend and his bride-to-be trusted me to photograph their wedding.

To be completely transparent, this wasn’t my first.

Over the past 20 years, I’ve photographed a handful of weddings (maybe half a dozen altogether), usually because someone knew my work, trusted me, and asked.

But I’ve never really considered myself a wedding photographer.

My career has been rooted in commercial, portrait, and editorial photography, and weddings were something I occasionally photographed rather than something I actively pursued.

This one made me wonder if I’d been overlooking something.

I approached their day the same way I’ve spent my career approaching people: beautiful light, thoughtful composition, direction when it helps, and enough space for real moments to happen on their own.

And what surprised me was how much I loved it.

Not just making beautiful portraits.

The people.

The nervous few minutes before everything begins. Parents trying not to cry. Friends being ridiculous. The quiet looks between two people when they think nobody is watching. All of the little moments happening around the big ones.

Those were the photographs I kept looking for.

I wasn’t interested in making their wedding look like every other wedding.

I wanted their photographs to feel timeless, editorial, human, and unmistakably theirs.

Portraits with the polish and intention I bring to my editorial work, alongside all the imperfect, unscripted moments that actually tell the story of the day.

Because eventually the flowers are gone. The cake gets eaten. The music stops. And all of the planning that consumed months of your life becomes a memory.

The photographs stay.

And hopefully, 30 years from now, they won’t just remind you what everyone wore or how everything looked.

They’ll remind you what it felt like to be there.

Here are a few of my favorites.

After 20+ years of occasionally photographing weddings while insisting they weren’t really my thing, I’m beginning to think I may have been wrong.

So, for 2027, I’m doing something a little different.

I’m opening a limited number of wedding dates for couples who want photographs that feel less like a formula and more like them.

Planning a wedding in New York, Connecticut, Florida, or somewhere worth getting on a plane for?

Let’s create something worth keeping.
